A breed now attracting a certain amount of interest, the Welbar was created not by the team at Cambridge but by a Mr Humphreys from Devon. Chicks were hatched from original Welsummer and barred Rock matings in 1941. The cockerels of these were then bred back to Welsummer hens. As can be expected, there was some variation between the early examples of the breed, but Mr Humphreys selected stock that most closely matched the size, shape and egg colour of Welsummers. This breed, along with Cream Legbars, is gaining support from dedicated fanciers and back-garden keepers alike.
